Of the more than 68,000 estimated new cases of cancer diagnosed during 2018 throughout Ohio, more than 7,000 lives will be claimed by lung cancer in the state this year, according to the American Cancer Society.
Screening, early detection, treatment, and prevention are the keys to fighting this deadly disease. They are important year-round, but at the forefront throughout November, which is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Ohio Basement Authority can help you improve the air you breathe in your home, as well as the health of your living environment and your quality of life.
Rid Your Home of Radon
The biggest step you can take is having your home tested for radon. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is present in homes across the country. Much of Ohio, particularly in the central region, is estimated to have elevated levels of radon.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and this gas has been linked to more than 20,000 deaths every year. The presence of this gas is especially hazardous for current and former smokers.
You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but this silent killer is one you must address. The only way to know for sure what you are up against is to test your home for radon.
We at Ohio Basement Authority can assist with the testing and explaining the results and next course of action. Mitigation systems are strongly recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency when a home’s radon level is above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
No level of radon is safe – as 1 pCi/L is equivalent to 2.5 cigarettes – but having a mitigation system to draw radon from your house and safely expel it will significantly help in lowering your home’s radon level as much as possible.
Conquer Your Crawl Space
Are you aware of what is underneath your house? If you have a vented crawl space, your quality of life could be suffering because of it. Vented crawl spaces allow outside air, water and pests into your home to create an unhealthy, unsightly area.
Your crawl space could have standing water, moldy support beams, saturated insulation, termites and mouse droppings. Because of the stack effect – air in a house circulating from bottom to top – whatever is in your crawl space is in the rest of your home affecting you.
Our crews can transform these “out of sight, out of mind” areas by waterproofing, encapsulating and insulating them with the best products to ensure your home’s health from the ground up.
Deter Mold, Mustiness with a Reliable Dehumidifier
Mold and musty, unpleasant odors are concerns in crawl spaces and basements. We have a solution that can be used in either of these areas to improve air quality. The dehumidifier cleans and filters the air, controls moisture and humidity, and reduces odors and the potential for mold growth. It self-drains (into waterproofing systems and sump pumps) so there are no buckets to have to worry about emptying.
