With her office door open, Brandie Koehler can hear appointments being booked with customers and logged onto inspectors’ calendars electronically. She can’t help but smile and chuckle at memories of what this process used to look like a few years ago.
“When I first started, we had one phone line and call waiting,” she said. “Everything was on paper and I wrote appointments in a day planner. The guys (inspectors) had no access to anything, and I had to email them their schedules the day before. There have been lots of changes in the five years that I’ve been here.”
This is one of the many memories of the “early days” of Ohio Basement Authority. Our company was born nine years ago this month, and was the product of a dream of helping people and being the best in the business by doing the right thing.
Doug Secrest grew up in the construction industry and he was part of similar business ventures. But he envisioned more. He knew more was possible. He and a handful of like-minded, close-knit peers built the foundation of Ohio Basement Authority with hard work, loyalty and dedication.
“At the beginning, we started off in a two-truck garage with an office no bigger than a hallway,” he said. “But we knew we were doing the right thing, taking small steps. And I can remember writing the schedules on a desk calendar. I’m proud I was there at the beginning, and it’s been fun to watch the company grow. We created a great footprint to want to work off of, so it’s exactly the same feeling at Florida Foundation Authority.”
While Jim’s current focus is with business in Florida, he often returns to his Ohio roots and is happy to see familiar and new faces.
“It’s still like a family atmosphere, just in an advanced setting,” he said. “Everyone is pitching in and has a key role to play. The growth will never stop at this point. It’ll just getting better every year.”
Remembering her interviews with Doug, as well as John Becker, Brandie said she was drawn to a wealth of possibility.
“The deciding factors for me to want to work here were their motivation, drive, vision, and long-term goals,” she said. “I never anticipated it to be what it is now. It’s not profit-driven. The culture has shifted to focus on the people. Everyone is so happy.”
Zeke Fowler, who has been an inspector with Ohio Basement Authority for more than one year, originally wanted information about mitigating radon in his home. But after interacting with our staff, hearing our company story and learning how he could earn a good living, he knew this was something he wanted to be part of.
“I met with people here who said what was possible is definitely possible,” he said. “It’s impressive to see the culture and the growth that’s not stopping. Doug certainly picked the right people.”
These past nine years have been filled with remarkable memories and learning experiences, and we are excited to see what the future holds.
