Challenge

When a homeowner in Mansfield, OH, recently moved into his house, he decided he would be living in the house for just a few years. But he wanted to fix up the 50-year-old house to ensure its health and safety.

Some safety issues he wanted to address right away were the cracking and tilting foundation walls. The homeowner was concerned these walls could eventually fail and affect the home’s structural integrity. He also wanted to ensure the home’s future resale value.

As he began to research possible repair options, the homeowner came across Ohio Basement Authority’s website. After gleaning some information from the site, he was motivated to contact us to learn more about how we could help him. He met with one of our inspectors who completed a thorough evaluation of the home and its foundation walls that were showing signs of failure. Our inspector then presented the homeowner with one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions.

Solution

One of our crews, led by Foreman Milton Castro, then installed several Carbon Fiber supports on the walls. These strong supports will permanently reinforce the walls where they are installed, as well as prevent any future cracking or inward bowing.

In order to ensure a clean workspace, as well as the proper adhesion of the Carbon Fiber strips to the walls, the walls were sanded down in the areas where the strips were to be installed. Holes were then knocked into the bottom courses of the block walls and reinforcing steel, or rebar, was placed inside. This helps to anchor the walls. The holes are then filled with cement.

Epoxy resin is then applied to the walls and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on the top of the walls to anchor the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is applied to the straps to seal them against the walls.

The Carbon Fiber supports may not appear aesthetically pleasing, these durable supports can easily be concealed with paint, drywall or other basement finishing materials.

The homeowner was pleased this reliable repair method was installed to help him create a safe and stable living environment.
