Waterproofing a Leaking Basement in McArthur, OH

Wednesday, January 31st, 2018 by Holly Richards-Purpura

When they moved into their house 30 years ago, homeowners in McArthur, OH, had no intentions of moving. They plan to live in the house for the foreseeable future, which is why maintaining a safe and healthy living environment is very important to them.

The owners recently noticed that water appeared to be leaking into the basement during periods of heavy rain. This water would puddle and stream across the floor, leaving visible damage behind. Concerned with potential damage to the furnace and water tank, the owners were motivated to address this issue once and for all.

As they began to research potential repairs, the owners came across information about Ohio Basement Authority through online resources like Home Advisor. They were eager to contact us to learn more about how we could help them remedy the problem. Inspector Francis Purcell then visited to complete a thorough evaluation of the basement. Francis discussed his findings with the homeowners, as well as their goals with a repair project. Francis then presented the homeowners with the perfect repair solutions.

Foreman Martimiano Alonso and his crew then waterproofed the basement with the BasementGutter drainage system, SafeDri Triple sump pump, CrawlSeal Wall System, and exterior FreezeGuards.

The perimeter of the basement was first excavated in order to properly install the BasementGutter system. BasementGutter is specially designed to sit in the sub-floor and atop the footer so it can intercept leaking and built-up water from the walls and floor. A section of French drain was installed in the floor in front of the basement’s walk-out access door. This system functions the same as BasementGutter, and it is connected to the BasementGutter system to drain any water that may seep in near the doorway.

Any water collected by the BasementGutter system is then directed to a sump pump system. We installed the “king” of sump pump systems – the SafeDri Triple. Equipped with three powerful pumps inside its liner, as well as an external backup battery, the reliable SafeDri Triple will always work to pump any seeping water out of the basement. The backup battery ensures the system’s operation even during the event of a power outage, and it allows the system to pump more than 11,500 gallons of water on a full charge.

Two FreezeGuards were attached to the exterior sump pump discharge lines to ensure the water pumped out of the basement will have an easy escape if the discharge lines should freeze or become blocked.

Additionally, the basement walls were covered with CrawlSeal liner. This thick and durable liner is used in crawl space encapsulations, but it has other practical uses as well. Not only does the liner improve the appearance of the older brick walls, it also helps with waterproofing. Any water leaking through the walls will automatically run behind the CrawlSeal liner and down to the BasementGutter system.

The homeowners now have peace of mind knowing these trustworthy repairs will help enhance the health and safety of their living environment.
