Permanently Reinforcing Cracking, Tilting Walls with Carbon Fiber in Springfield, OH

Monday, May 14th, 2018 by Holly Richards-Purpura

Challenge

During the few years that they have lived in their house, homeowners in Springfield, OH, have been keeping an eye on some structural problems they noticed. Several areas of the foundation walls were cracking and appeared to be tilting inward.

While these are common signs of foundation wall failure, the homeowners knew these symptoms needed to be addressed sooner rather than later. They were concerned with the home’s safety and structural integrity, as well as the potential collapse of the walls.

As the owners started to research possible repairs, they found information online about Ohio Basement Authority and were motivated to contact us. They met with one of our inspectors who completed a thorough evaluation of the home and the condition of the foundation walls. After discussing the homeowners’ goal of permanently stabilizing the walls, our inspector presented the owners with one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions.

Solution

One of our crews, led by Nate Klingenberger, then installed many Carbon Fiber supports on the problematic foundation walls. These durable supports permanently reinforce the walls where they are installed and they help protect the wall from any further cracking or inward bowing.

The crew first sanded down the sections of the walls where were the strips were to be installed to ensure proper adhesion to the walls. Holes were knocked into the bottom courses of the walls and pieces of rebar (reinforcing steel rods) were placed inside the walls to anchor them at the bottom. The holes were then filled with cement.

Strong epoxy resin is then applied to the wall and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on top of the walls to anchor the top of the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is then applied to the straps to seal them against the walls.

Any cracks along the walls also are filled and repaired. Once the epoxy resin is dry, the Carbon Fiber supports can easily be concealed with paint or basement finishing materials for improved appearance.

The homeowners now have peace of mind knowing this trustworthy repair solution was used to help them create a safe and stable living environment that they will be able to enjoy for many years to come.
