Carbon Fiber Supports Stabilize a Home For Sale in Westerville, OH

Challenge

After living in his house for several years, a homeowner in Westerville, OH, was prepared to sell the home. Before doing so, he knew it was a good idea to first fix several issues around the house. This included addressing a section of one of the foundation walls that showed signs of failure in the form of various cracks.

The owner’s realtor recommended contacting Ohio Basement Authority for assistance. The owner did so, and he met with Inspector John Becker Sr. John visited the home to evaluate the condition of the problematic foundation wall. John then suggested one of our reliable foundation repair solutions.

The homeowner agreed with John’s assessment, and one of our crews then installed one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions - Carbon Fiber supports.

Solution

Carbon Fiber supports are heavy-duty straps that firmly adhere to the wall to permanently stabilize it in its current position and prevent any further cracking or inward bowing.

The crew first sanded down sections of the wall where the straps were to be installed. This ensures the wall will be clean so the Carbon Fiber strips can be properly installed. Holes then were knocked into the bottom courses of the wall along the path of the straps. Pieces of rebar, or reinforcing steel rods, then were placed in the holes to help anchor the wall. The holes then were filled with cement.

Small steel brackets were attached to the sill plate on top of the wall, and strong epoxy resin was applied to the wall and the Carbon Fiber strips. After the straps were in place, another coat of epoxy resin was applied to seal them against the wall.

While these dark supports may not be aesthetically pleasing, their low profile allows them to easily be concealed by basement finishing materials like paint or drywall.

The homeowner is happy this repair project was completed to not only help ensure the home’s resale value, but also the safety and structural integrity of the house for the next owners.
