Stabilizing and Waterproofing a New Homeowner's Basement in Lancaster, OH

Challenge

When she recently purchased a house in Lancaster, OH, a new homeowner hoped this would be her residence for the foreseeable future. Considering this, the owner wanted to tackle necessary repair projects to ensure the health and safety of her home.

Some of these included addressing various areas of the foundation walls that she noticed were cracking and beginning to tilt inward. There also was visible evidence of water intrusion that challenged the existing sump pump system.

The owner was acquainted with one of Ohio Basement Authority’s teammates, so she knew she could count on us for the perfect permanent solutions to these issues in her basement. She met with Inspector Andy Kennedy, and he completed a thorough evaluation of the home. Andy then presented the owner with one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions, as well as our best basement waterproofing solutions.

Solution

Foreman Martimiano Alonso and his crew then worked to stabilize and waterproof the home.

The problematic foundation walls first were stabilized by many Carbon Fiber supports. These durable supports not only permanently reinforce the wall where they are installed, but they also prevent the wall from any further cracking or inward bowing.

The first step in installing these supports involves sanding down sections of the walls where the strips will be installed. This ensures the walls will be clean so the strips can properly adhere to the walls. Holes are then knocked into the walls, usually near the bottom of the walls or third course of the concrete block. Pieces of rebar, or reinforcing steel, are then placed inside the holes to help anchor the walls. The holes are then sealed with concrete.

Strong epoxy resin is then applied to the walls and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on the top of the walls to anchor the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is applied to the straps to seal them against the walls.

Even though Carbon Fiber supports don’t appear aesthetically pleasing, these durable supports can easily be concealed with paint, drywall or other basement finishing materials.

During this process, the basement’s perimeter also was excavated in order to properly install the BasementGutter system. BasementGutter is specially designed to sit in the sub-floor and atop the footing to accept seeping water from the walls and floor. This water is then directed to the new sump pump that was installed to replace the older, failing system. Equipped with three powerful pumps and an external backup battery, the trustworthy SafeDri Triple will always operate to pump water out of the basement and away from the home’s foundation.

Additionally, FreezeGuards were attached to the exterior sump pump discharge lines to prevent flooding if the lines should freeze or become blocked.

The homeowner now has peace of mind knowing her home will be protected by these trustworthy repairs.
