Stabilizing Cracking Garage Walls with Carbon Fiber Supports in Heath, OH

Monday, June 11th, 2018 by Holly Richards-Purpura

Challenge

A homeowner in Heath, OH, has lived in his house for almost 20 years. During the last year, he noticed walls in the garage building, some of which was below grade, showed signs of possible structural issues. Some areas were cracking, and others appeared to be tilting inward.

The homeowner didn’t want the building to collapse, so he was motivated to seek the best structural reinforcements. Once he saw Ohio Basement Authority’s TV ads, the owner was eager to contact us to learn more about how we could help him. He met with Inspector Jacob Thomas, and Jacob completed a thorough evaluation of the problematic foundation walls. Jacob then presented the owner with one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions.

The owner was equally eager for one of our crews to reinforce the garage walls.

Solution

Foreman Levi Fletcher and his crew accomplished this by installing several Carbon Fiber supports on the walls. These sturdy supports permanently stabilize the wall and hold it in its current position. They also prevent any further cracking or bowing in the areas where they are installed.

To install these supports, the areas of the walls where they will be placed are sanded down. This ensures the walls will be clean and that the Carbon Fiber supports will firmly adhere to the walls. Then, holes are knocked into the bottom courses of block along the path of the Carbon Fiber supports. Pieces of rebar, or reinforcing steel, are placed in these holes to anchor the bottom of the walls. The holes are then filled and patched with cement.

Once this cement is dry, strong epoxy resin is then applied to the walls and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on the top of the wall to anchor the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is applied to the straps to seal them against the walls.

These supports are dark in color, but their low profile allows them to easily be concealed by paint, drywall or other basement finishing materials.

The owner now has peace of mind knowing the garage will be a safe and stable structure because of this trustworthy repair project.
