Transforming a Nasty Crawl Space for a Healthier Home in Hilliard, OH

Tuesday, May 28th, 2019 by Holly Richards-Purpura

A homeowner in Hilliard, OH, has lived in his house since it was built 35 years ago. He was recently motivated to address an issue he had been putting off for quite a while – the crawl space. This area under the house was an unsightly and unhealthy one. It had moldy and failing insulation, standing water, high humidity and unpleasant odors.

After seeing Ohio Basement Authority’s TV ads, the owner wanted to contact us to learn more about how we could help him. Inspector Andy Kennedy ventured into the crawl space to complete a thorough evaluation of this area. Andy discussed his findings with the owner, who expressed his goals of wanting better air quality and a permanent fix so he would never have to worry about it again. Andy then presented the owner with several trustworthy repair solutions.

One of our crews then transformed the crawl space by properly waterproofing, encapsulating and insulating the area.

The crew took great care to remove the nasty insulation and other debris from the crawl space, then they began to install the waterproofing solutions. CrawlDrain was placed in the floor to catch seeping water. This water is then directed to one of the two sump pump systems – the SafeDri and SuperSump – installed in the large crawl space. These systems then pump the water out of the crawl space and away from the home.

ExTremeBloc panels were placed on the walls, and spray foam was applied to the band joists. These are much better alternatives to fiberglass insulation that can easily hold onto moisture and develop mold.

The crawl space was then encapsulated in thick and durable CrawlSeal liner. This liner completely seals the crawl space, isolating it from the earth, and it helps prevent moisture and vapor intrusion. Vent covers were placed on the home’s exterior to further seal the crawl space from outside air, water and pests.

Additionally, a dehumidifier was placed in the crawl space to help improve the home’s air quality. This compact, yet powerful and energy-efficient unit cleans and filters the air, controls moisture and humidity, and reduces odors and the potential for mold growth.

The homeowner now has peace of mind knowing these reliable solutions have helped create a safer and healthier living environment.
