Barber in Sunbury, OH Experiences Water Leakage and Bowing Walls

Monday, September 19th, 2016 by Holly Richards-Purpura

Challenge

A homeowner in Sunbury, OH, runs a small barbershop out of his basement, so when he started experiencing water coming through the walls and wall bowing, this put a halt to his business. He called us for help to get his barbershop up and running again.

Certified Inspector Brendan Kent suggested installing a SafeDri Prox sump pump with an attached FreezeGuard for cold weather. He also recommended the BasementGutter interior drain system for waterproofing, as well as Carbon Fiber Straps for the bowing walls.

Solution

The home and business owner agreed with all of Brendan's suggestions.

The installation crew first installed the SafeDri Prox System. This is a powerful 1/3 horsepower cast-iron sump pump capable of pumping 2,200 gallons of water out of the basement per hour. As all of our sump pumps do, this included a stand (used to raise the pump off of the bottom of the liner; this keeps any silt or sediment that settles at the bottom of the sump pump pit away from the pump) and an Alarm (a system which sounds off to let one know if water has risen past the point where the pump should have turned on).

Then, they connected FreezeGuard to the sump pump discharge line. This system allows water to escape from this line in the event of pipe freezing or if the pipe becomes blocked for any reason. FreezeGuard works even if the outlet is buried under a foot of snow and ice!

Next, the crew installed the BasementGutter System. This is an interior drainage system designed to prevent clogs from soil under the floor. It has holes in the back and side to collect water from all angles, and a special flange to accept water that may run down the walls.

Finally, the crew applied Carbon Fiber to the bowing walls. This fiber has a very high tensile strength (the resistance of a material to break under tension) and is almost impossible to stretch. It is adhered to concrete walls to keep them from bending or bowing inward.

The homeowner can now go back to running a safe and dry business worry-free.
