It’s easy to fall in love with the charm and appearance of older homes. It’s important, however, to seriously consider the structural stability of these aged buildings.
Upon purchasing their house in Alexandria, OH, new homeowners trusted their first home inspector who assured them the 127-year-old house was in decent shape. But when a plumber and a general contractor ventured into the basement and crawl space areas, they noticed improper support systems that contributed to sagging areas of the first floor.
With the assistance of their general contractor, the homeowners contacted Ohio Basement Authority, hoping to find a permanent repair solution. One of Ohio Basement Authority’s experienced inspectors completed a thorough evaluation of the home and its structural supports. He found that the floor joists in the basement and crawl space were failing, along with the existing support jacks.
Our inspector recommended one type of our many reliable foundation repair products, and the homeowners were excited to have one of our expert crews install this permanent solution. The crew installed a total of 30 IntelliJacks throughout the basement and crawl space.
Light-duty jack posts like the ones in the basement often are installed on top of a concrete block that rests on the ground. These posts are not very stable, cannot support much weight, and can easily rust and corrode. The IntelliJacks we replaced these jack posts, with, however, are made of galvanized steel. This enhances their durability and makes them resistant to rust, corrosion, and rot.
The IntelliJacks permanently stabilize the above floors and help raise them back to the proper level. They also are designed to prevent further settling. But if any settling occurs, the IntelliJacks can easily be adjusted. The IntelliJack system also can support vertical loads exceeding 20,000 lbs.
The owners now have peace of mind knowing their home will be a safe and structurally sound living environment for many years to come because of this repair project.
