Creating a Healthy Storage Space in Reynoldsburg, OH

Thursday, November 8th, 2018 by Holly Richards-Purpura

They have lived in their house since it was built 24 years ago, but it wasn’t until recently that homeowners in Reynoldsburg, OH, began to question the health of their home.

They noticed a strong presence of moisture in the crawl space. The fiberglass insulation was falling from some areas of the crawl space walls, and moisture seemed to be easily trapped between the gravel floor and plastic floor liner.

The homeowners use the crawl space to store a variety of seasonal décor and other items, but this is not a healthy storage space based on the aforementioned conditions. They wanted to protect their living environment, as well as their cherished belongings, so they began to investigate options for repair. The homeowners were motivated to contact Ohio Basement Authority for assistance after seeing our TV ads.

They met with one of our inspectors who presented the homeowners with several reliable solutions after completing a thorough evaluation of the crawl space.

Per our inspector's recommendations, one of our crews then encapsulated the crawl space.

The first step was removing the existing insulation, floor liner, and any other debris from the crawl space. Then, thick drainage matting was placed on the crawl space floor to enhance the strength and durability of the encapsulation system.

The entire crawl space was then encapsulated with CrawlSeal liner. It completely seals the crawl space from the earth, prevents vapor and moisture intrusion, and helps insulate the crawl space. Similar to swimming pool liner, CrawlSeal is thick and durable, and tough enough to crawl on. It also brightens the crawl space and dramatically improves the area’s appearance.

Additional installations included spray foam insulation that was applied to the band joists, and a dehumidifier. This powerful, yet energy-efficient unit helps clean and filter the air, control moisture and humidity, and reduce odors.

The homeowners are excited to now have a healthier and more functional crawl space.
