Ohio Basement Authority Case Studies: Egress Window Improves Safety, Appearance of a Home in Zanesville, OH

Monday, May 22nd, 2017 by Holly Richards-Purpura

After living in their house for four years, homeowners in Zanesville, OH, recently decided they wanted to use their basement as a more functional, livable space. Specifically, they wanted to finish the basement and enhance the safety of a room their daughter expressed interest in using as a bedroom.

Along with checking these projects of their to-do list, the homeowners knew they needed to have other home improvement and repair projects completed as well. They wanted to make sure everything in the home was brought up to code.

According to the International Residential Code for One-and Two-Family Dwellings, “Basements, habitable attics, and every sleeping room shall have at least one operable emergency escape and rescue opening." The answer is to have an egress window installed.

The homeowners began to research how to best address this, and they contacted Ohio Basement Authority after learning more about us through online resources like Home Advisor. They met with inspector Steve Davis who concurred with the egress window installation and explained the process to the homeowners.

One of our crews then installed the egress window in what was intended to be used as a bedroom. The crew first excavated the area outside of the window system’s intended location. Then they took great care to cut into the block foundation wall to make room for the new window.

The window is then secured in place. Its double-pane glass is energy-efficient, and the all-vinyl frame resists rust.

A lightly-colored window well was installed outside the window on the home’s exterior, which allows more natural light into the basement. A durable clear cover was attached to the well to enhance safety and to help keep leaves, debris and precipitation out of the window well.

The homeowners are pleased to have an updated basement window system that enhances the safety and appearance of their home.
