Permanently Reinforcing a Cracking Foundation Wall with Carbon Fiber Supports in Lewis Center, OH

Monday, June 19th, 2017 by Holly Richards-Purpura

Challenge

During the two years that they have lived in their house, homeowners in Lewis Center, OH, have noticed a problem in their basement starting to get worse. One of the foundation walls was cracking and seemed to be slightly tilting inward.

The owners were concerned these issues could result in significant damage if they did not address them soon. They wanted to prevent the cracks from widening and the wall from collapsing in the future.

They started to research how to best address these issues, and they came across Ohio Basement Authority’s website. That motivated them to contact us to learn more about how we could help them. One of our inspectors met with the homeowners and assessed the condition of the wall. He then presented the homeowners with one type of our many reliable foundation repair products.

Solution

Foreman Milton Castro led his crew in installing several Carbon Fiber supports on the problematic foundation wall. These durable supports not only permanently reinforce the wall where they are installed, but they also prevent the wall from any further cracking or inward bowing.

The first step in installing these supports is sanding down sections of the wall where the strips will be installed. This ensures the wall will be clean so the strips can properly adhere to the wall. Holes are then knocked into the walls, usually near the bottom of the wall or third course of the concrete block. Pieces of rebar, also known as reinforcing steel, are then placed inside the holes to help anchor the walls. The holes are then sealed with concrete.

Strong epoxy resin is then applied to the wall and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on the top of the wall to anchor the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is applied to the straps to seal them against the wall.

Even though Carbon Fiber supports don’t appear aesthetically pleasing, but these durable supports can easily be concealed with paint, drywall or paneling for a more finished look.

The homeowners are happy this trustworthy repair method was used to help them create a safe and stable living environment.
