Stabilizing a Cracking, Tilting Wall in Thornville, OH, With Carbon Fiber Supports

Thursday, June 29th, 2017 by Holly Richards-Purpura

Challenge

Since moving into their house three years ago, homeowners in Thornville, OH, have been monitoring possible structural issues in their basement. During that time, they have noticed cracks on one of the foundation walls were expanding and worsening. This wall was also slightly tilting inward near some of the cracks.

Concerned the wall could eventually fail completely and compromise the structural integrity of their home, the owners started to research how to best address these problems. They came across Ohio Basement Authority’s website, and they were motivated to contact us to further learn about how we could assist them.

The owners met with one of our inspectors who assessed the condition of the foundation wall. He then presented the homeowners with one type of our many reliable foundation repair solutions.

Solution

The homeowners were equally eager for one of our crews to install several Carbon Fiber supports on the foundation wall.

In order to ensure a clean work space, as well as the proper adhesion of the Carbon Fiber strips to the wall, the wall was sanded down in the areas where the strips were to be installed. Holes are then knocked into the bottom courses of the block wall and reinforcing steel, or rebar, is placed inside. This helps anchor the walls. The holes are then filled with cement.

Epoxy resin is then applied to the wall and the Carbon Fiber strips. Small steel brackets are attached to the sill plate on the top of the wall to anchor the Carbon Fiber supports. Another coat of epoxy resin is applied to the straps to seal them against the wall.

These strong supports will permanently reinforce the wall where they are installed, as well as prevent any future cracking or inward bowing.

The homeowners now have peace of mind knowing this trustworthy repair solution has helped them create a safer living environment.
