It's easy to take for granted the everyday necessities most of us have like food, clothing, and shelter. Numerous people out there do not have these things, and many of them are veterans. Almost 30 years ago, Vietnam veterans in San Diego, CA, started an event that would help their brothers and sisters with these essentials. These events, known as Stand Downs, are held across the country, including here in Columbus.
The 21st annual Central Ohio Homeless Veterans Stand Down was held Oct. 20 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. This one stop shop provided food, clothing, health screenings, and medical and legal assistance to more than 500 veterans.
Along with 70 social service agencies, more than 250 volunteers united in this effort to help veterans in need. Several Ohio Basement Authority employees were among them. Our staff was assigned to the grocery section, and we helped fill and hand out bags of food to the veterans before they exited. We were honored to give our time to such a worthy cause and to say "thank you" to these courageous men and women.
