Challenge
After living in their house for six years, homeowners in Marysville, OH, had grown tired of a small basement window that was not serving much purpose. It was not big enough to let enough natural light into the basement, and it was not the safest feature in the functional basement.
The International Residential Code for One-and Two-Family Dwellings states that all habitable spaces, including basements, are required to have at least one operable emergency escape and rescue opening. This means an egress window needs to be installed.
The homeowners began to research how to best address this, and they were eager to contact Ohio Basement Authority after finding information about us online. They met with Inspector Victor Golowin who concurred with the egress window installation and explained the installation process to the homeowners.
Solution
One of our crews then installed the egress window. After removing the existing window, the crew excavated the area outside the window and carefully cut into the block foundation wall to make room for the new window. The new window’s all-vinyl frame is rust-resistant, and the double-pane glass is energy efficient.
A light-colored window well installed outside the window allows more sunlight to bounce into the basement, and brightens up the space. A sturdy clear cover attached to the well for safety also prevents weed growth and keeps leaves, debris, and rain out of the well.
The homeowners are pleased to have an updated basement window system that enhances safety and appearance.
