Education is the Key to a Healthy Home

Knowledge is power.

This is especially true when it comes to your home. As a homeowner, it is important for you to properly maintain your house, and that goes for every nook and cranny.

Crawl spaces are often forgotten or neglected areas that are underneath the house or just off of the basement area. Many crawl spaces have dirt or gravel floors, poor or nonexistent insulation, open vents, unpleasant odors, and even bugs and other pests. It’s natural to not want to venture into these nasty areas. But subscribing to the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality could end up harming you and your family.

Whatever is in your crawl space also is in your house affecting you. This is because of what is known as the stack effect. Air, vapor and moisture are drawn up through the house in an airflow pattern from bottom to top.

Ken Leachman, a homeowner who lives in the northern Columbus, OH, suburb of Worthington, has a home office in his basement. As he began to work one day after a few days of springtime rain, he noticed a musty smell in the basement. While investigating the source, he found water in the partial crawl space adjacent to the basement’s laundry room area. This area also had moist insulation on the walls and plastic liner on the floor that was beginning to fail.

This leaky, smelly crawl space is contributing to an unhealthy environment in the home.

Ken knew he could count on Ohio Basement Authority to help him remedy the problematic area and create a healthier home because of his knowledge about our company through his daughter Sarah who formerly worked in our production department.

After he scheduled an appointment, one of our expert inspectors completed a thorough evaluation of the home and its problematic crawl space. He then educated Ken about why the crawl space was a smelly, leaky area, and he presented Ken with several reliable repair options.

Ken was impressed by our inspector’s expertise, and this prepared him for the installation process. As Foreman Jose De Jesus Tellez Ortiz led his crew in waterproofing and encapsulating the crawl space, Ken knew exactly what was happening and why.

The crawl space has been waterproofed, insulated and encapsulated. Now the crawl space, as well as the rest of the house, will be healthier.

While the crawl space in Ken’s home was unhealthy, there are many more crawl spaces in worse condition that our inspectors have seen. Our team of highly trained, experienced and certified inspectors and installation crews are not afraid to venture into these nasty areas of homes. We are willing to do whatever it takes in order for our customers to have healthier and safer places to live.

We are eager to get into homes to install the very best permanent solutions, but we also take the time to educate homeowners about why and how their homes have certain problems.
